James Cui is a Full Member of the Australian Cinematographers Society (ACS) and an Associate Member of the Australian Directors Guild (ADG).

He began his career in cinematography in 2015, shooting his first feature film. In 2020, James won the Best Feature Film Cinematography award at the New York Cinematography Awards (May Edition). That same year, his work was nominated for the Australian Cinematographers Society NSW Awards. In 2023, James received the Best Documentary Director Award from The Martini Film Awards, presented by JMC Academy and sponsored by the Australian Directors' Guild. Additionally, his photography work earned an Honourable Mention from the International Photography Awards in 2023.
